Are you willing to trade in your company BMW for a third-hand van? How about swapping your Manolo Blahnik mules for a pair of wellies, and not even green ones, at that? Would you know what to do with a vegetable that was covered in earth instead of cling film?
Lawrence Langland certainly would. Tired of corporate politics and fifteen-hour workdays, he yearns for a simpler, better quality of life. To his surprise, his wife Isobel, who proudly displays a gold-plated keyring inscribed with 'Born to Shop', also wants to escape. This is good news for their eight-year-old son Jacob, who can leave his horrid boarding school. However, it will take more convincing to get their elder daughter Dory on board, although she perks up when she learns there are boys in the countryside too.
So, the Langland family becomes “downshifters,” trading a comfortable house for a small cottage and suburbia for the pleasures – and the challenges – of country life. Making the decision was easy. But can they handle the reality?
